                                              Elements of Design

Line
Line is the distance between two points. It can vary in length, width, direction and many different styles. Some examples being smooth, thick, thin, curved, angled, curly, sharp, etc. What the line turns out like depends on the type of tool used, amount pressure applied and more.
Shape
Shape is a two-dimensional area defined by other art elements. The basic shapes include the square, rectangle, triangle and circle. Shape can be open or closed as well as solid, organic, repeated, symbolic and proportional.

Form
Form is a three-dimensional figure opposed to shape which is flat. The basic forms include spheres, cubes, pyramids, cylinders, cones, etc. Form can can be rounded, squared, angular, textural, contain volume and/or mass and more.
Texture
Texture can be seen as well as felt. Texture can also be simulated meaning it can be seen but not felt. The type of texture depends on the surface being used. Different surfaces include bumpy, rough, smooth and more. It can also be patterned.
Colour
Colour occurs when light is reflected back to the eye after striking an object. Primary colours which can be mixed to make the rest of the colour wheel include red, blue, and yellow. Using shading you can adapt the colour making it brighter, darker, warm, cool and more. Colour can add decoration to the picture/art as well as symbolic meanings .

Tone/Value
Tone/Value is the amount of light or darkness added to a colour. Tone can be described as dull, dark, stark, strong and weak.
Intensity
Intensity is the amount of brightness a colour has. This can be described as radiant, strong, weak, vivid and dull.

                                                                           Principles of Design

Balance
Balance is when different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

Movement
Movement is when elements are under the rules of principles in a picture to make the picture look like its in motion. In movement the art should flow.

Emphasis
Emphasis is when an area or object in the artwork has attention drawn to it. You minimize or tone down the other parts of the drawing to bring attention to the focal point.

Contrast
Contrast is created by using elements that conflict with one another. Contrast is usually made by using complimentary colours or extremely light and dark values.

Pattern
      Pattern is a repeated design(s).

Unity
Unity is how well different parts of art build on each other.
